Incredible things can happen within the realm of community. Asthmatic Kitty artists Helado Negro and Julianna Barwick are proof of this. After meeting and getting to know each other, they formed a new collaborative band, OMBRE, and have recorded a beautiful new full-length album. Believe You Me is set for release on August 21st. After a tour in 2010, the two artists started working together without any definitive goals. Helado Negro said,
“We really had no clue what we were going to make and we would just throw things out there and record. The majority of it took place at my personal studio, Island Universe Space. We would just jam or record vocal ideas or whatever; it was all just organic and at the same time we were getting to know each other even more as friends.”
The result of this process is dazzling. The first single, “Cara Falsa,” finds both artists playing to their individual strengths, while at the same time constructing a gorgeous track that offers more than the sum of its parts. Julianna’s angelic and unmistakable voice provides an ethereal blanket to wrap around Helado Negro’s unique rustic blend of his Latin, psychedelic, and folk influences. Julianna Barwick expands her palette on Believe You Me by playing guitar, synth, vibraphones, and piano, instead of sticking to her usual a capella work. “Cara Falsa” takes you to another dimension of reality, a place we’d all like to call home.
