A few years ago, I stumbled across a performance by Thao & The Get Down Stay Down at SXSW. I was familiar with the group and had even listened to several songs, but they were not on my “to-see” list that year. Their show at Antone’s stole my attention. I’ve been patiently awaiting new material ever since. We were blessed with a release from Thao Nguyen in 2011 with Mirah (Thao & Mirah), but the upcoming album will be the first with The Get Down Stay Down since 2009′s Know Better Learn Faster.
We The Common will be released on February 5th via Ribbon Music. The album was recorded in San Francisco and here in Dallas with John Congleton. Thao had this to say about the album,
“We the Common is an album about wanting to be a human who tries and is grateful for the opportunity. It is about wanting to be better and closer to people. I have had over a year respite from touring and recording—in this year I started really trying to be a part of the community I live in and the family I was born into.”
